My Journey: Iron Sharpens Iron

True freedom from sin is found in Christ.

Now there was a certain man among the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler (member of the Sanhedrin) among the Jews, who came to Jesus at night and said to Him, “Rabbi (Teacher), we know [without any doubt] that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs [these wonders, these attesting miracles] that You do unless God is with him.”” JOHN‬ ‭3:1-2‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Freedom is not from religion per say (e.g. believing that ritualistic behaviour will free you). It is not from a leader. Not even Nicodemus a leader had freedom. He had to go in the night to find true freedom in Christ. The only source for forgiveness and liberty is through the son of the living God. We ought to submit and surrender to the almighty God.

The Bible contains the word of God which is the truth.

The apostle Paul wrote the fourth Gospel John. Matthew, Mark and Luke are apart of the synopsis of the Gospel of Jesus. However, John by itself contains the true and full Gospel of Jesus by itself.

“So Jesus was saying to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My word [continually obeying My teachings and living in accordance with them, then] you are truly My disciples. JOHN 8:31 AMP

Jesus spoke to the Jews that believed. He knew that they believed because they continued to obey His Word, receive His teaching. As believers we should keep His word not just read it but live by it and walk in love with others. We can on progress to transformation by doing this. The hope of the Good News is we do not have to live in slavery to this world (full of sin). We can be children of God.

Who is your father and what does divine sonship mean to you?

“Then the Pharisees said to Him, “Where is this Father of Yours?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.”” ‭‭JOHN‬ ‭8:19‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Jesus Christ is the Messiah. Believers who seek redemption must seek Jesus. Jesus can cleanse us from our sins so that we can become spiritual children of God. Yes, God is our creator, but we cannot claim to know Him or be His children until we believe in His son. Some people see the word of God as creative writing. However, the Bible is not a beautifully written creative piece of work by humankind as to origin and design. Meaning, the words did not originate from the intellect of a man. It was planted in the minds of believers by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit empowered chosen men to write God’s word. In modern day, the Holy Spirit prompts us to think a certain way or to do things that we would not think or do on our own.

There are a lot of things that we will not understand, but the Holy Spirit can give us understanding. Some people call it their conscience or their “gut feeling”. Either way we were all born with an understanding of right and wrong. This is not a fairytale or myth. God can inspire anyone. We need to share our story with each other.

Why should we share our stories?

As iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens [and influences] another [through discussion].” PROVERBS 27:17 AMP

We are inspired to profess the Good News as we are a chosen generation to receive the Gospel of Christ. Those who receive and believe in the Gospel of Christ are God’s people. Anyone can be God’s people. It doesn’t matter who you were before, it only matters if you believe and desire to be born again (through divine transformation).

Jesus answered, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot [ever] enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh [the physical is merely physical], and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” JOHN‬ ‭3:5-6‬ ‭AMP‬‬

The birth from my mother’s womb was my natural birth and when I die I will die a natural death. It is natural because the wages of sin is death. It would be unnatural for a sinner to live forever. God did not create us to live an eternal life with sin. When we have a spiritual birth we are reborn and die to the flesh. This transformation means that we are no longer slaves to sin and free to have an eternal life with God.

In other words, we are born of the flesh when (1) the water breaks and we are born from our mother’s womb, then (2) we are reborn of the spirit by having a true relationship with Jesus. The renewal that takes place is spiritual so it is far beyond our comprehension. Unfortunately, this is also a period where we realise that we are powerless and that we cannot truly do things on our own without God’s help. Also no successful man is an Island so it’s important that we seek fellowship with other believers to feed our spiritual growth and to have accountability. A new baby needs help to walk!

That is why true freedom can only be found in Jesus Christ. No other god/s can provide this. God’s obedient children are free from spiritual bondage (not controlled by their flesh and sinful desires). We can profess that we love Him and that we believe in Him, but if we are not keeping His word then we are not His disciples. If we are not obedient then we are going against the commandments of God. Everyone falls short of this or slips up now and then as no human is perfect, only Christ (not a human but He took on flesh). You have to continue to keep His word by the daily renewing of your relationship with Jesus and self-reflect and repent when you know in your heart that you have done wrong. The focus is spiritual freedom. Not getting out of jail or slavery etc. Some of us are suffering because we are captives to our own uncontrollable sinful behaviour. The word of God has the power to deliver us from our sinful bondage. It gives us hope!

Ignorance is a comfort. Unbelievers do not want to come out of their comfort zone.

“Jesus answered, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, everyone who practices sin habitually is a slave of sin. Now the slave does not remain in a household forever; the son [of the master] does remain forever. So if the Son makes you free, then you are unquestionably free. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants; yet you plan to kill Me, because My word has no place [to grow] in you [and it makes no change in your heart].” JOHN 8:34-37 AMP

Jesus already spoke to the believers. So His reply is to the unbelievers. The unbelievers answered that they were not in bondage, but that is a physical and spiritual lie. They were in bondage in Egypt, in bondage to Rome and to other nations. However, Jesus wasn’t talking about political bondage but bondage of the soul. There is always opposition and rejection to the truth. No matter how absurd the lie is, if a person does not want the truth they will say anything to reject it. Unbelievers do not want the truth. When I was an unbeliever anything or anyone that made me feel guilty or wrong was ignored. I had an answer for everything and I was very defensive. This is our sinful nature.

The devil is the father of lies. We have to be able to understand and to be able to discern lies created to break us down from the truth which was created to build us up. Unbelievers are filled with pride and prejudice. Not everyone will receive the truth but we must declare the truth same way. In a loving way of course. If it cannot be done we must pray for unbelievers that their hearts are no longer hardened.

Conclusion: What is the truth?

But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you].” JOHN 16:7 AMP

We were born in sin and inequity but we do not have to continue being in sin. Believers must continue to read the Bible and pray daily. Live by faith and not by deeds. If you live by faith the Holy Spirit will guide your actions. However, if you live by deeds your actions will depend on how you feel each day and your intentions or what you want which can change with the wind.
