The word of God does not change! The ethos behind His commandments provide us with a consistent sense of order and direction – the building blocks of right and wrong – guided morality that never changes. Do not worship other gods… do not make idols… do not disrespect God’s name… do not forget to keep a holy day for God… do not disrespect your parents… do not kill… do not cheat… do not steal… do not lie… do not be envious of others…
Imagine this – how can the creator of many universes and time be limited or wrong? God existed before, during and after His creation. You are here to be a witness (holding yourself and others accountable) and a good steward of your lifestyle. Your lifestyle is how you carry yourself and how you treat other people.
A Broken World
There is a greater God. He created us with a conscience. He built us with our own image and personality. It is better to believe in God (and many other realities of His existence) and be right than not believe at all and be wrong. There is something fundamentally missing in each and every one of us – look at the suicide rate right now – the demographic stretches from rich to poor people.
About 800,000 people commit suicide every year. The statistic is truly tragic. It’s so tragic that these lives were ended so abruptly and that the individuals were so convinced that they no longer belonged, that their life had no significant purpose to serve or that the current emotions, physical placement, mental state or that empty spiritual energy was permanent. We all have a role to play and every situation in life is temporary. We just need to remember that we are serving a higher purpose than ourselves. That’s the starting point that so many of us have skipped – to our detriment.
Hope in a God-given Purpose
Having a sense of purpose comes from having respect for your creator and all of His creation – and knowing that you have a special space. This foundation provided me with a higher sense of purpose when I wanted to throw in the towel because I had guided morality – my challenges are not personal to only me. Sometimes they have nothing to do with me. Matter of fact most of my challenges are bigger than me.
Guided morality gives you a skeleton (the starting point) for what is morally right and wrong. God provided us with written and overarching commandments of how we should live on this earth. The commandments provided us with a moral code. What we choose to do with it (aka our selective lifestyle, the selective denomination that we choose or the selective religious practices that we adhere to) is truly irrelevant due to GRACE, LOVE and FORGIVENESS – this is free will.
Guided Morality & Character
How you intentionally go about hurting other people or refusing to help other people whenever you can is very relevant. This is relevant because such behaviour forms the tiny grain of cement that builds the foundation of a callus or cold hearted character towards other people. Your character is who you are when no one (or no one relevant to you) is looking. Your character will constantly be judged by others and you will continue to receive the opinions of others.
You should care about how you are perceived by others. You should care about your legacy to others and what you leave behind as well. Not a focus on materialistic things, but a focus on your reputation or character – are you known for pulling others up or down? However, the final opinion that inevitably matters is God’s. He is seeing everything and knows the bigger picture. The choices that you make now has the power to impact the life of every person that you come in contact with – this is the bigger picture – life is bigger than you.
Your creator is the only being in this universe that can ultimately judge you for these things in the end. He knows every single grain of your life and where the scale will be weighed. This is why your morality should matter more than anything else. It is your purpose to be the best version of yourself. When you heavily measure your worth and care about yourself and your reputation, you add personal value wherever you go. Guided morality produces a compassionate human – capable of treating others with delicate care. What is the character of your contribution to other people, animals or your environment? Is is good? or is it bad?
Your God-given Purpose Is Much Bigger Than You
Every person should have the opportunity to fulfill their God-given purpose on this earth. God uses His creations as vessels to carry out His work – everyone and everything works in accordance with God’s will. Therefore your purpose should not be overshadowed or in competition with the purpose of another person. Everyone has a role to play and this creates a special symbiotic relationship amongst believers.
Your purpose cannot be found by living according to the opinions or emotions of your parents, spouse, friends and thanks to social media, the opinion of anyone who thinks your lifestyle is their business. An opinion can change. It is heavily guided by a human’s physical environment, mental state and spiritual foundation. When you are drowning in opinions – turn to the one that never changes – your creator.
Having this moral code is the foundational structure to my spirituality. It gives me strength to feel spiritually whole with myself and others – even when i’m having a very bad day or not in the mood. I can then have a confident belief that I am redeemed because God gives me an everlasting purpose outside of myself. I am here for this higher purpose. God does not change. His word does not change. Time and culture changes, but not God – we exist in His hands ❤
